In Sept. 2021, Gary Savage drove from Tampa, FL to the Silver Spring home of his estranged wife, the Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office said in a news release.

Savage saw his wife and 44-year-old Whali Shabazz getting into a vehicle and proceeded to open fire, killing Shabazz, the Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office said. The estranged wife, who was not named by prosecutors, was not injured.

Evidence at the trial showed Savage knew the two were together and that Shabazz would be there when he arrived, the attorney's office said.

In court, Savage claimed self-defense saying he opened fire due to the perceived threat of a handgun that Whali Shabaz had in his possession.

Savage was convicted of attempted first-degree manslaughter and voluntary manslaughter. He faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced in November.
